Northern Spire, Wear Crossing

“It is one of the region’s biggest civil engineering projects, and an investment that is going to help create more jobs and more economic growth.”

The late Councillor Paul Watson
Leader, Sunderland City Council

Northern Spire

The Northern Spire is a £117.6m project to build a new road bridge across the River Wear. It will open in Spring 2018.

A striking, design that will become a city and regional landmark, the Northern Spire is part of the Sunderland Strategic Transport Corridor. This will link the International Advanced Manufacturing Park on the A19 with the Port of Sunderland, both recently designated as Enterprise Zones.

In addition the transport corridor is opening up significant new development sites along the southern riverside, suitable for a range of uses and with superb transport links. Sites are coming on stream now, with more becoming available as the project progresses.

In total the bridge and transport corridor will help create an estimated 6,000 new jobs at development opportunities across the city.
