Image representing Island

Island brings together a dynamic selection of artists to explore the notion of 'island life' in Britain since 1945.

The exhibition includes work by renowned modern British photographers including Martin Parr, Chris Killip, Ingrid Pollard, Tacita Dean and Tony Ray-Jones, alongside a major new commission by John Kippin & Nicola Neate and artistled community projects.

Island explores current debates central to the coastal experience including environmental change and rising sea levels, unemployment, poverty, inadequate housing and resources, and our difficult relationship between land and sea. These concerns are presented side-by-side with romantic seascapes and documentary photography celebrating the heydays of the British seaside holiday.

Island is the seventh in Sunderland Culture's series of Arts Council Collection National Partners Programme exhibitions and is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
